One week down...

Here is a picture of our new sisters: Alehandra is on the left and our other roommate from Germany Julia is on the right.

We just finished classes for the week. I think both of us have learned a ton this week and are having a hard time keeping all the information straight. It's a bit overwhelming!

Steve has been a bit under the weather for the past 24 hours. He slept a lot yesterday and is a bit doped up on drugs. He dreamt of being kidnapped by McGyver last night if that tells you anything. We hope he starts to feel better soon...being sick is no fun and being sick in a foreign country is even worse!

Today is the celebration of the immaculate conception and there have been firecrackers going off since last night. From our bedroom window, we were able to see the fireworks last night. They even woke us up at 4am- not sure why the immaculate conception makes people want to light fireworks, but oh well...

Through conversations with Alejandra (host mother), we have realized her family is very influencial in Morelia. She is one of 9 siblings and her father was one of 4 brothers- all of them owning a part of Morelia. Her family owns the bull fighting rink and we are hoping to go tomorrow to see one of her nephews. He is a novice, so he will be fighting against smaller bulls, but bulls nonetheless.

We are considering going to a movie tonight or something a bit more cultural. We haven't yet seen much of the city except for a 3-hour tour on Wednesday evening. Morelia has quite a history! We have been quite exhausted at the end of each day and usually spend time in a 'sobremesa', which is a talk around a table. The people here spend a lot of time talking, which is good for our Spanish, but exhausting for our brains!

On the 12th of December, all of Mexico celebrates el dia de la Virgen Guadalupe, who is the patron saint of Mexico. From what we understand, things will be quite crazy. There is a carnival down the street from us and everyone sells cut sugarcane with lime, salt, and chile powder sprinkled on it. It took us a while to learn how to eat it, but we finally figured it out.

I think that's about it for now. We welcome emails!!!

Laura recalls the night of Max's conception and specifically notes "fireworks" in our bedroom. Must be something us catholics do.
